Key Stage 1 Year 1 & 2 2016 - 2017
Preparation for the year 2 SAT’s are under way and all of the children are working exceptionally hard. As you will have noticed your child (year 2 only) has started to bring a spelling log book home (red). In this log book are the spellings your child needs to learn ready for their test on Friday, spellings they found tricky the previous week, as well as any high frequency words they find difficult to spell. We also ask that you listen to your child read daily – 5 minutes a day will make a huge difference, remember to ask them questions about what they have read as well. Don’t forget your child can access their online active learn reading account where they have access to hundreds of books at their level – ask your teacher for more information.
Our topic this term is – Bright Lights, Big City
What do you know about England’s capital city? Let’s find out all about London, including its history, transport and famous landmarks. We will look at our own locality and compare Dunsville to London and England to Peru. We will plan a tour of Dunsville for Paddington Bear (he’s come from Peru don’t you know!) making sure he gets to know where we live.
What will we be doing this term?
Maths – we will practice key skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and how these link together for the inverse operation. Children will explore 2D and 3D shapes and begin to look at fractions including 1/4, 1/2 and 1/3
Geography – We will be looking at human and physical features of Dunsville and going on a walk around the village. Children look at famous London landmarks and how these differ to Peru. They develop their knowledge of the world and the continents and begin to compare countries.
English – we will read Michael Bond’s ‘A bear called Paddington’ and write exciting character descriptions, predictions of the story and much more. We hope to share some of our Paddington adventures on the website…
